GARY J. OLIVER, Ph.D.

Dr. Gary J. Oliver is a husband, father, university and seminary professor, psychologist, author, Executive Director of the Center for Relationship Enrichment and Professor of Psychology and Practical Theology at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

He received his B.A. from Biola University, an M.Div. from Talbot Theological Seminary, a Th.M. from Fuller Theological Seminary, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.  He is a licensed clinical psychologist in both Arkansas and Colorado.  Dr. Oliver is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).  He has earned the Certified Family Life Educator (C.F.L.E.) diploma by The National Council on Family Relations. 

Dr. Oliver has over 30 years experience in individual, premarital, marital and family counseling.  For several years he worked as senior psychologist with a group of family practice physicians and for over 12 years he was Clinical Director of a large non-profit counseling center in Littleton, Colorado.  For the past 20 years he has had an extensive nationwide teaching ministry.  He has founded, developed and directed several counseling centers.  He serves on the Executive Board and the national speaking team of Promise Keepers and of the American Association of Christian Counselors.

In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Oliver has over ten years experience serving on the staff of churches in California, Nebraska and Colorado.  He is also Associate Professor and Program Director for the D. Min. in Marriage and Family Counseling at Denver Seminary.  For the past several years Dr. Oliver has been included in  Who’s Who in America.  Dr. Oliver was recently selected as a Senior Fellow by the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).

He and his wife, Carrie, co-authored their most recent book, Raising Sons…and Loving It!, published by Zondervan.   He is also the co-author of ten books with H. Norman Wright including Fears, Doubts, Blues and Pouts published by Victor Books, Raising Kids to Love Jesus published by Regal Books, and Good Women Get Angry published by Servant Publications, as well as over fifty articles in national magazines and journals.  Dr. Oliver is the editor of the AACC publication Marriage and Family: A Christian Journal, a contributing editor for New Man Magazine, and he and his wife write a regular column in Marriage Partnership and Home Life magazines.  For three years he served as host of Confident Living, a radio program for men produced by Back to the Bible and heard throughout the United States and Canada.

Dr. and Mrs. Oliver travel both nationally and internationally providing their Growth-Focused™ Marriage Enrichment Seminars.  They and their family reside in Siloam Springs, Arkansas

Movie Night and the Wii (Friday): We will show Facing Giants and have several Wiis on hand. 

Jim Barrons, Christian Illusionist and Comedian (Saturday).  Jim is a full time professional entertainer and a morning radio personality on WBCL. Over the years he’s performed and emceed shows with Donny Osmond, actor Kevin Bacon, The Smothers Brothers, and singers Chubby Checker and Mark Lowry. 

Refreshments, cards and board games will be available each night.

Shipshewana’s Farmstead Inn and Conference Center
Built in 2004, the Farmstead Inn reflects a traditional Amish farmhouse. The center features welcoming fireplaces in the spacious entrance and throughout the Inn.  There is an indoor pool and hot tub, ping pong and basketball court.  It is located next to the Trading Place Antique Gallery (over 100 vendors), across from Yoder’s Red Barne Shops, and is within walking distance of 90 specialty stores in historic downtown Shipshewana.  Also visit the many custom built furniture galleries, Davis Mercantile (23 shops, 100 year old Denzel Carousel) Das Dutchman Essenhaus with bakery (29 different pies) the town of Middlebury and old fashioned General Stores.  Rooms are $69 plus taxes (per night) - a fourth off their regular rate.

Each couple receives a Decorative Gift Bag filled with goodies; a door prize (e.g. painting, gift cards, gift baskets, pottery); and a treat in your room upon arrival.  You also will have someone praying for you and will receive a card (or gift) of encouragement.

Massages
Jami Hashbarger of Healing Touch Massage will be at the retreat all day Saturday offering 15 minute ($10) chair massages or an hour Swedish massage for $30 (during the free time).
